Client Challenge – Ultra-Long Life and High Pulse Demand
A global logistics company developing GPS asset trackers faced major challenges with its battery system. The devices required 5–10 years of operation without replacement, but conventional batteries failed to meet this demand. In addition, frequent GPS data transmission caused high pulse current consumption, leading to rapid battery depletion. Moreover, trackers operated in harsh environments with temperature fluctuations and vibration. Therefore, the client needed an ultra-long-life asset tracker battery solution with stable pulse performance and high reliability.
Our Solution – Hybrid Lithium Battery with Pulse Optimization
To address these challenges, Himax Electronics designed a custom asset tracker battery solution. First, we selected a Li-SOCl₂ primary battery for ultra-low self-discharge and long lifespan. Next, we integrated a hybrid capacitor system to handle high pulse current during GPS transmission. In addition, we optimized the power management system to reduce energy waste. As a result, the battery achieved both long standby and high pulse discharge capability, fully supporting IoT tracking applications.
